War of the Roses - First Forray

On Saturday January 17, 2026 the Centurions wargaming club hosted their first game Field of Glory, Ancient and Medieval: 3rd Edition set during the Wars of The Roses.  The Wars of the Roses has long been a passion project of mine.  Seeing the game on the tabletop, even in it’s incomplete form, brought me a lot of joy.

The Wars of the Roses, a dynastic struggle between the House of Lancaster and House of York, lasted from 1455 to 1487, vying for control of the English throne.

The Centurions game was a fictional encounter diving up the sides, putting 12 units on the Yorkist side facing off against 8 units and two light units and a light gun on the Lancastrian side.

Yorkist forces on the top
Lancastrian on the bottom

Both sides initially surged towards one another closing to long range bow fire when the majority of the Yorkist side paused and the Lancastrian Left and Center closed the gap.

The forces of Stanley were outnumbered on the Left of the Lancastrian line and determined the best defense was a good offense.  The Longbowmen charged the Yorkist Longbowmen on the other side.

With the Left of the line engaged the Lancastrian Center moved forward, slowly and methodically.

The Lancastrian Center closes
the gap.

The forces of Stanley were routed from the field on the Lancastrian Left, but the Lancastrian Center broke the Yorkist Line and began pushing outwards.

Lessons Learned

Game Play

  • Even though the base measurement increases from 1 inches to 1 1/2 inches units need to start closer together.  We started approximately 36 inches apart, and while the turns moved quickly it was still three turns to get within range as both sides closed.   At most 24 inches.
  • On a 12 foot wide table the largest game could be 15 units per side.
  • It will be interesting to see other unit types on the battle field, Pike, Spearmen, Combined Battle Groups, and Strakes.

Rules

  • All foot in this period are NOT shock troops except Mercenary Pikemen.
    • Big Bad Butch Men-at-Arms wielding a variety of nasty can openers are not a shock unit.
  • The order for post combat is Commander Killed, Death Roll, Cohesion Check
  • Pole Arms reduce the opposing armor by one step, protected becomes unprotected.
  • Longbowmen (and combined units) must make a CMT to charge.

Tactics

  • A unit of Men-at-Arms, Heavily Armored, Superior, Drilled, is 17 points per base well spent.
  • Canons are pretty but with a range of 9 inches, not worth the points.

War of the Roses - Update

Battle of First St. Albans

On May 22nd, 1455 the forces of the House of Lancaster and York collided at the sleepy town of Saint Albans.   Traditionally the First Battle of Saint Albans marks the beginning of the War of The Roses, the dynastic struggle to control the English Throne between the House of Lancaster and House of York.

Richard, the 3rd Duke of York led 3,000 men towards London and were confronted by 2,000 men loyal to King Henry V at Saint Albans north of London.  The first battle of Saint Albans was a decisive Yorkist Victory even though the Total Casualties were only 160 combined.

The Centurions are planning to add the War of The Roses to our rotation of games begging on Saturday November 1st, 2025, utilizing Field of Glory Ancients 3rd Edition.  There may not be additional forces available to play for our first game.   Detailed information on Force Construction and Allegiance system may be found here.

On August 16th, before the FOG-Ancients game, we will be hosting a show and tell to display the figures painted so far in preparation for future games.

Initial Command

One unit of six stands longbowmen and one unit of four stands billmen and a dismounted Troop Commander.

Note: The Centurions are adding a new class of dismounted billmen or spearmen with an "armor type" of protected as opposed to Armored or Heavily Armored as required by the list.   This should give better representation of the different categories or class of men who filled these roles on the Battlefield during the period.

Basing

  • All Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery bases have a 60mm frontage;
    • Infantry 30 mm deep
      • Light Infantry - 2 Figures
      • Medium Infantry - 3 Figures
      • Heavy Infantry  - 4 Figures
    • Cavalry 50 mm deep
      • Light Cavalry - 2 Figures
      • Heavy Cavalry - 3 Figures
  • Dismounted Troop Commander - 1 dismounted knight figure on 30mm round base.

War of the Roses - Figures Available

Just a quick update for everyone.

The Source Comics and Games has brought in the line of Perry Plastics including the War of the Roses Figures.     A playable force of two units can be created with one box of WR1 Plastic Wars of the Roses Infantry (bows and bills).   I recommend using Deluxe Plastic Magic as the glue to assemble the Figures.

War of the Roses

As a group we have had a long running discussion about wargaming the War of the Roses [WotR]. A few of us had previously purchased a box (or) two of figures for the WotR when the Source Comics and Games carried Perry Miniatures. Fitz and I have been discussing how to move the project forward recently and getting figures on the table.

This weekend Pat B. informed me the Source will again be carrying Perry Miniatures, assuming everything goes as planned, in the near future. There is an opportunity to piggyback on the first order if you are interested.

WotR has a low cost entry point, while we don't have the price yet figure about $40 (give or take) for a box of Perry Plastics. WR1 - War of the Roses Infantry, has 40 figures which can be configured into 2 Leaders, 15 Billmen, 18 Archers and 5 extra figures. This arrangement is the basis of an "Allied Command" for Field of Glory (3rd Edition). This mix creates a Troop Commander, 4 Bases of Protected Billmen (16 figures), and 6 bases of Archers (18 figures).

If you are interested in participating in this project let me know.

Next 'Batailles de l' Ancien Regime' (BAR) game - April 4

Getting ahead of the curve here.

I am planning on the next Batailles de l' Ancien Regime (BAR) game for Saturday April 4th, 2015.   This is the day before Easter.   Unfortuantely with my schedule as a Hockey Parent this is the first Centurions Game Day that I can schedule without a potential for conflict.

Happy Gaming

ReCon! - Jun 14, 2014

The next ReCon!, the single day convention sponsored by the MMGA, is scheduled for Saturday June 14, 2014 at the Geek Partnership Society [GPS].  GPS is located in North East Minneapolis at the Waterbury Building, 1121 Jackson St NE, MLPS MN 55413.

The 14th is the second Saturday of June and an "off" weekend for the Centurions Schedule at the Source.

Having already considered running something that weekend I have jumped in front of the ReCon! bus and offered up my Wars of the Jumbo Alliance, 25mm French and Indian Wars/ Seven Years War game using a slightly modified version of Batailles de l'Ancien Régime [BAR] for a game.

The game should comfortably support 6 players and if I can get into my "painting zone" maybe as many as 8 players.  However a number of players also own figures, just saying...

Fall fun with the Centurions

Hey gang,

Time to post the new schedule.  It has been an interesting summer with the Napoleonics FoG and the RF&F games getting added to our schedule.  Over the next couple of months we will be getting back to our basics, SYW & TYW, as well as adding Samurai to the mix.  There's a ReCon on this list with many club members putting on games.  We will even have a return to Rokugan in October.  Except for the ReCon, all the other games will be held at the Source and will begin around 11:00am.  Here's the list!

Saturday - Jul 20th

Spring Schedule

Hey gang,

Here it is, we've just run the second game of March and I haven't done anything with the schedule in a while. Time to line up some new games. Here's the offerings so far:

Saturday - Apr 7th
15mm SYW - Koenig Krieg
Wars of the Jumbled Alliances
11am Source Comics and Games

Saturday - Apr 21st
15mm ACW - Regimental Fire & Fury
11am Source Comics and Games

Saturday - May 5th
15mm Ancients - Field of Glory
Early Imperial Romans v. the World
11am Source Comics and Games

Saturday - May 19th
25mm SYW - Rules to be determined
Wars of the Jumbled Alliances on a Grand Scale
11am Source Comics and Games

For our next upcoming game I'll be running another in our series of Wars of the Jumbled Alliances. We have some new players and at least one new state, the Sardinians, that will be making their appearance on the field of battle. After that, Doug Martin will be running another Regimental Fire & Fury game for the second game of April. The first game of RF&F was very entertaining and this next one should be too.

The first game of May will be another Early Imperial Roman game using Osprey's Field of Glory rules and the opponent is yet to be determined. Tom Zwirn and I will be running the Ancients game. The second game of May will be an experimental SYW game in 25s to be run by Jeff Johnson. Jeff's game should be a hoot but it has a limited amount of positions available, 8 player max right now, so be there early for the game. If there is room available we may try to run a 15mm SYW game concurrent with Jeff's.

Just a couple of notes about the games, all experience levels are welcome and all figures are provided, though we welcome people who bring their own figures. These games will also be played at the new Source, so I am not sure what the playing space is going to be like. I know that the venerable sand table will be moved over to the new location soon though.

All these games will be fun and I hope to see you there!

Winter 2012 Schedule

Hey gang,

As we head into February our schedule will be getting really wild. We will be playing our first weekend game in February at the Source and then we will be taking our show on the road.

The third weekend we will be putting on a number of games at the Con of the North in conjunction with the Source. This is a cool con so c'mon by. We'll be playing some SYW, Napoleonics, and a whole lot more.

Next, the first Saturday in March is the next ReCon. The plan is to put on a game or two there too. Tom wants a TYW rematch, so be there. It's close and fun and you get a chance to see what others in the area are up to.

We'll be heading back to the Source on the third Saturday of March. The games for the third weekend in March and the first weekend in April have not been decided yet, so let me know if there is something you want to run or see run on those dates. Doug Martin will be running another game of Regimental Fire & Fury on the third Saturday of April.
